Scout like crazy! Talk to everyone you can! I have never seen such a friendly bunch of people in one place before. A few buddies and I went last fall, a first for all of us, and had the time of our lives! What part of Canada are you wanting to go to? When we went going into Canada was easy, coming back home took a little bit though. It is definately worth your time to go. make sure you have all paperwork together and current too. One other thing, when we went, $100 was worth about $96. Have fun if you go and take lots of film for your camera, you'll need it!

That is where we went, and like I said before, it was AWESOME!! I would also say watch the weather. Judging by what it was like for us (30-35 a.m. and 48- 60 p.m.) and after talking to alot of people, mid october is the time to go. I'm glad I could shed a little light off of what worked for us.

Just wanted to put this out there. I have been to Canada for the last 8 going on 9 years and I make at least one trip a year up there and yes we are 100% freelancing.

One of the biggest misconceptions (I know I had this one) before I went up there for the first time, was that as soon as you cross the border there will be ducks & geese everywhere. We figure that we will devote 2 1/2 days for scouting for every 6 days we hunt. The birds are not everywhere but during key migration and staging times when you find them you usually find them stacked up.

Also figure out where you want to go then do your home work starting NOW. Figure out before you get up there where the large pockets of public land are. More importantly where you can gain access to these lands and/or bodies of water. Do NOT make the mistake we did and count on the fact that you will be able to go knock on a door and they will gladly give you access. Although much better than it was a few years ago (AND There are SO many great people up there) there was many times that we would roll up to a farm house and on the front gate there was a sign saying "If our beef isn't good enough for you then neither are our ducks." Like I said it has gotten better but there are enough bad non-respectful American hunters that go up there each year the ruin things for the good guys.

Also when freelancing we always try and make an effort to contact the local Game Warden for the area we will be hunting in. It does two things for you. It will show him/her you have nothing to hide and chances are they will give you a good idea of what is around the area as far as birds. They tend to make a lot less of an effort to glass you/check you in the field when they see your US plates. Not that they will not stop by and see how things are going only that you will have set the ground work for a positive experience with them.

As for guides there of as many good ones as there are bad ones. Many times all you are paying for is access and lodging. But if you are willing to put fort the effort to get all your gear up there freelancing is really the way to go.

Also make sure to bring a portable BBQ..... One of the coolest experiences I have ever had up there was grilling up some birds from that day as we watch 20-25,000 ducks come into this large lake we camped by to roost for the night over the course of an hour. It was unreal!

Cheers,

Adam

thank you. We will not be paying for a guide service if we go with a guide we will be guiding for a couple of daysand getting paid for that, and then hunting the other couple of days. Well I know that people don't like to give away spots and what not but as far as sask. goes what is the best place to go as far as south east, south west, central etc.

excellent point about hte birds not being everywhere Wingman! We never did get into the honkers like we had hoped. They were still north and west of us, mainly because the weather up there hadn't been bad enough. we found out that it got that way a couple weeks after we left. But, it was still a cool experience! :D I don't think there was a night when we were outside that you didn't hear or see tons of ducks coming in.

I'm a little confused about the guide thing. You have guides licenses for Sask? Might want to check things out before you except money from anyone.... There are a ton of rules related to guiding in the provinces especially for US residents going up only for the purpose of guiding. There are also issues with not being associated with a licensed Sask Guide service. I'm sure I'm missing some important details there.

As for "Where to go?" The honest answer is it really all depends one the exact dates you will be up there and what you want to target. Let me know that and then I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Cheers,

Adam
