Hunt of a lifetime........

Once in a Lifetime : Rocky mountain Goat

Wasatch Mountains, Timpanogos

Bill Skuppin Jr, Bill Skuppin Sr, Thomas Skuppin, Chandelle Skuppin & Richard Skuppin

September 12th, 13th & 14th

Friday morning at 7:00 we started our hike up the trail head. The backpacks were full of enough gear to spend three day’s on the mountain about 45 pounds apiece. The hike took us 10 hours, it should have only taken us 4 hours. As soon as we got to Hidden Lake Billy spotted the 1st Goat of the trip. The billie was all alone and had some heavy horns so I named him Heavy. :)

Shortly after spotting our first goat we spotted the second goat of the trip. Finding two Billies in ten minutes made the 10 hour hike worth it! This goat was a younger billie, he was very shaggy, named him Shaggy! :) We are defiantly on the right track & in the right area to find more Mountain goats.

After we eat dinner, we hiked to where we wanted to call camp. Nothing like sleeping under the stars! We spotted two more goats from camp & had a Nanny & youngster walk 100 yards from us, that was very cool. :)

It’s now Saturday & opening morning. Billy & I headed up the trailhead looking for more goat’s. We found a herd of 40 to 50 across a huge gorge. Image
Also a lone billie up on a 200 foot cliff (Bill didn’t want to shot a goat in a area like that, I don’t blame him). Thomas & Dad went down to check on Heavy. After a short time we got a call that Heavy was still in the same area from the night before. So Billy & I headed down the trail to go get a closer look at Heavy.

Around 9:30 my wife Chandelle had made it to our lookout point. I was very excited to see she made the hike up to us & happy she was going to be there for this once in a lifetime hunt.

Heavy was in a spot where Bill didn’t want to take the shot, so we waited for him to make his move. So we waited & waited :D . Image
Around 5 o’clock Heavy started to feed in an area we could take him. Bill & I started to make the stalk, Heavy would feed & then lay down. This and the wide open county made stalking him very slow. After about an hour of stalking Heavy, Bill & I had closed into 100 yards.

Bill took his time so that he could make a great shot. BOOM, Billy shoots at the goat & hits high on the shoulders!! Heavy takes his time getting up & shakes off the hit from Bill’s 300 mag. Heavy then turns to give Bill a broadside shot. BOOM second shot hits true & Heavy falls dead in his tracks………
