can you guys please explain what's up with the different duck calls.
how many different sounds do they make ??
I understand the high pitch ones for more distance and low ones for more inclosed areas but why so many?????
remember I've never actually sat in a blind with ducks comming in to a call.
mostly jump shooting.
I just need to understand this whole calling thing

well since you haven't really sat in the blind it doesn't matter about that. there are people like featherhead that can't sit still in the blind so he is rarelly in the blind. Well some calls are easier so blow than others people really go for the look of call I know people who don't buy a great sounding call because of the look. There are double reeds, single reeds, triple reeds, there are so many different sizes that will give you different pitches such as the micro hen or bucks new call whatever that thing is called they are really short.

Bucks new call is the baby buck. Capt Chris check out www.callingducks.com and go to the sound files. Once you are in with the sound files look at the meat duck sounds and not the comp comepletely different sounds.

Comp stuff is for fun, you don't have to be a comp caller to get them in the dekes. Just my opinion.

that is very very true. comp callers just do it for fun but at the same time it does make you a very good caller. Ever since I have started comp calling in goose I have learned a whole lot

I would love to try comp calling just for kicks to see how I would do. Plus the prizes are sweet!

Comp Calling is about calling to a human standard (a score reflects how well that individual followed that standard as well as how he/she hits each particular call needed to be heard by the judges (i.e Hail, Feed, Rolling Feed, Greet, Lonesome Hen, etc..).

Meat Calling put simply is about calling to sound like real birds.

They are both two very distinctly different styles and approaches to calling. There are many great (true) meat callers out there that could not (or would not) even try to put a routine together for the stage. Just as there are many Comp callers that have well seasoned/proven routines on the stage but have no idea what real birds sound like or have no idea how to read birds and work them into a spread.

The reason why you see so many calls on the market today is (#1 the internet has exploded the industry as a whole) and #2 becasue there will always be someone that believes they can make a better call. Better looking, Better sounding etc. I have bought, used, traded or sold, well over 50 calls over the years. Why??? Because every call (even the same type call by the same call maker in a different material e.g. woods and or Acrylic single or double) will blow slightly different.

all this info really helped alot!! I don't think I'll ever be on a stage doing comp calling but I really want and need to learn how to meat call. There are many reasons why but My goal is to master every form of hunting and fishing before I die !!!!
It'll probably never happen but I'm going to give it all I got, and with the help from folks like you all I will always come closer to my goal.
BTW I've reached EVERY major goal I've ever made in my life. So now I made an even harder one. WOOOOOHOOOOO bring on the ducks !!!

not to discorage but I really don't know if you can master hunting there is always a kink thrown in there somewhere. To be a great hunter on the other hand and a great caller is a whole nother game.

p.s. If you do need some help on calling myself and featherhead are close by and could help ya out
